Book Summary:
The project was initiated upon the signing of the Gabcikovo-Nagymaros Treaty on September 16, 1977 by the Hungarian People's Republic and the former Czechoslovakia People's Republic. The goal of the Gabcikovo-Nagymaros Barrage System included the generation of electrical energy; improve navigation, control floods and assist regional economic development. Problems surrounding the environmental and economic consequences generated by the project, along with unilateral decisions began to create such controversy it lead to the case being brought forth to the International Court of Justice. The circumstances surrounding this project have been used in this paper as an example of the need for international policies to protect the demands placed on natural resources and the environmental and economical vitality of the regions impacted by this transboundary project.
