The changing distribution of body mass index in the Mississippi adult popultion, 1990--2003: Implications for public health policy

Book Summary:
In Mississippi, the prevalence of adult obesity has increased greatly since regular surveys began in 1990, but it is not clear whether this has resulted from weight gain affecting the whole population more or less equally or predominantly those persons who were already in the upper half of the weight distribution, that is, above average weight. Using self-reported data from an annual statewide telephone sample survey for the period 1990–2003, we show that the distribution of BMI is positively skewed and that the skewing has increased over time. This increase in the positive skewing, rather than any shifting of the BMI distribution curve as a whole, accounts for the increase in obesity prevalence. This suggests that public health measures to prevent obesity should be aimed primarily at those persons in the upper part of the distribution rather than at the whole population.
