What are the prospects for nursing informatics? Posted on:  August 27 2004 21:17 GMT -05:00

I have been asked this question a dzon times though in several forms and my answer has always been the same - good! Nursing informatics cannot be going through a better time now as the push for interoperabilty leads to a need for experts who undertand both health and information technology and how to interwine both fields to improve clinical workflow. There is no one better to lead that charge than the nursing informatics professional. I believe more and more organizations would seek to have thier own in house expert rather than hire expensive consultants to tell them how to coem about implementing technological solutions. So is it time to get on the boat? I should think so.

Obi, Bayo,

Since your comments/observations of August/September 2004, three years on, what is the status?  Are we see more nurses taking on Informatics to match the infiltration of ICT into the profession?

What healp would you say nurses need in order to become effective Change Agents and to capitalize on the change and become better off?

Thanks/James

From the time that I posted three years ago till date, the nursing informatics landscape has changed. There are a lot more job opportunities now there there were three years ago.

Also according to the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Survey (http://www.himss.org/content/files/surveyresults/2007NursingInformatics.pdf), which was conducted in both 2004 and 2007, there are now a higher percentage of formally trained nursing informatics professionals than there were three years ago, and I believe this partly due to an increase in the number of nursing informatics academic programs and courses.

The survey also shows that the average pay has risen $69,500 in the 2004 to $83,675 in 2007 in the US, a twenty percent rise, which is well above the inflation rate.

Moreover optimism within the field is still high as many believe that "nursing informaticists will continue to have an impact on the organization’s decision making process, positively impact the implementation of EHRs and ultimately have an impact on improved patient care."

Good, the increase the nursing informtics professionals and the rise in pay/benefits means that not only are the nurses coming on board the change process but it's also making a difference in their bottom line.

The nurses are indeed key stakeholders in Health Informatics Service Delivery.
