What is E-Networking?

E-Networking and Biotechnology
The biotechnology industry expands as new ground-breaking technologies are introduced into the market. Biotechnology merges biology and technology to make advancements in the medicine, food, agriculture, and other fields. As the field expands, the need for biotechnology scientists and experts to network with one another becomes increasingly important.

The problem is that the field is so busy and there is a lot of work to do, it can be hard to find time to network is others. That is why e-networking is so important. E-networking uses the standard principals of networking but instead of the process taking place in person, it takes place online. This saves time and can help you develop friendships easily from all over the globe.

The fact is that biotechnology is something people are interested in on a global scale. The more people you can reach and network with, the easier it will be to make advances. That is what e-networking is for. Everything can be done online. For example, if you read about someone who made advancements in the medical aspect of biotechnology and you are interested in asking them about it, you can send an email. This benefits both of you because the person would be more likely to respond.

Advantages of E-Networking
The biggest advantage of e-networking is that it eliminates the intimidation factor. Some people are naturally good at person to person interactions. They are confident and always seem to know what to say. For others, however, talking with others can be a struggle.

E-networking gives those who are shy or get nervous in social situations a chance to make contacts and meet people. The computer tends to make people feel anonymous so they won’t have a problem emailing someone or replying to someone on a forum or in an online network. And even if you do not get nervous in social situations, you are limited by the time frame so you may not meet as much people as you would like. With the internet, you can network whenever you like. Just make sure to stay organized when developing contacts otherwise all your efforts will be for nothing.

Another advantage to e-networking is that a lot of people simply do not have time to attend a conference, seminar, or attend a networking event. Between working and spending time with family, there is not a lot of time that one can spare to attend these events. In order for networking to be done well, it needs to be tended to regularly. Taking a few minutes to compose an email is a lot better than spending a few hours at a conference where you may or may not meet potential contacts.

What E-Networking Entails
Simply put, e-networking is the art of meeting people in your field and developing a list of contacts that you can use to build friendships and professional relationships. Traditional networking takes place face to face either at conferences or other professional meetings. But the popularity of e-networking is making its way to the biotechnology field.

There are several different ways you can take advantage of e-networking for biotechnology. You can either build the contact yourself by emailing an individual directly, or you can look for them on professional e-networking sites. If you have a website, blog or are part of any e-networking communities, it will be easier to take full advantage of what e-networking has to offer.

How to Network Online
There are several different ways you can network online for biotechnology. First, in order to maximize the potential of this, you should at the very least have an email address that you check regularly. It can also help if you maintain a blog or have a website, but those two things are optional. The email address is the most important. Also, make sure you have an organized way to keep track of who you contact and their information.

One of the best ways to network online is to email other scientists and biotechnology experts directly. For example, if you read a paper and had some questions or wanted to give feedback, you could email the person who wrote the paper or did the study. Indicate that you are also part of the biotechnology profession and see if they want to exchange ideas, etc.

You can also find a professional networking website and set up a profile. This is a good thing to do if you wish to connect with other people outside of the biotechnology profession. Sometimes it is a good idea for scientists to speak with other scientists. Since biotechnology merges biology and technology, having contacts in various aspects of technology and biology can also be lucrative.

Forums newsgroups are also good places to exchange ideas with other biotechnology professionals and experts. Look for forums and newsgroups that focus on biotechnology or another related field. For example, if you are a specialist in the area of medical biotechnology you can also visit a forum or newsgroup that has to do with medicine.

What it All Means for Biotechnology
While networking online does not eliminate the needs to attend conferences and other industry events, it does make the process a lot easier and more lucrative. Developing a good private network is essential if you want to succeed at what you are doing. The more people you talk with, the more prominent you will be. This is important, especially if you want to win awards and other points of recognition. People will not know about you if you do not make an effort.

So, if you are interested in using the internet for networking for biotechnology, there are several ways to do it. You can email others directly, join networking websites, or visit forums. E-networking is also a good way to keep in touch with people you may have met. It is a lot easier and faster than calling. The internet, in fact, is a desirable way to network with other people in your field because it presents a fast and stress free alternative to meeting others in person.
