Greenwich Hospital, a 'Top 100 Most-Wired Hospital,' Deploys American Power Conversion's InfraStruXure(TM) On-Demand Data Center to Cool Blade Servers

InfraStruXure With Integrating Cooling Helps Hospital Cool its Blade Servers, as well as Ensures IT System Availability for Physicians, Nurses and Patients.
WEST KINGSTON, R.I. -- American Power Conversion (NASDAQ:APCC) (APC), one of the world's largest providers of equipment for network-critical physical infrastructure (NCPI), today announced that Greenwich Hospital, a 174-bed community hospital serving Connecticut's lower Fairfield County, recently selected APC's InfraStruXure(TM) with integrated cooling for the hospital's new data center in Greenwich, Conn. Capable of cooling 20kW (kilowatts) per rack, InfraStruXure with integrated cooling will serve as the physical infrastructure for the hospital's core IT applications. The hospital's physicians, nurses and patients depend on the availability of these IT applications such as integrated clinical and financial information, electronic document imaging and enterprise-wide performance management dashboard for urgent care delivery as well as high quality patient care 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

While the majority of the healthcare industry is still in the early stages of digitizing patient-facing applications such as multi-disciplinary clinical documentation and secure electronic medical records, Greenwich Hospital already has successfully implemented Fuji Synapse (PACS), Meditech (CPOE/POM), McKesson Horizon Patient Folder (EMR) and Health Vision MDLink.

APC's InfraStruXure architecture, which integrates power, cooling, racks, management and services, allows the selection of standardized components to create a scalable solution through modular and mobile configurations. This scalability takes much of the guesswork, over planning, delays and risk out of installing critical applications, and is optimized for today's high-density computing installations.

The integrated cooling system consists of APC's NetworkAir(TM) In-Row air conditioner and a Hot Aisle Containment System. The InfraStruXure system improves availability by placing the cooling system within the IT row and specifically addresses high density IT technologies such as power-dense servers. In addition, InfraStruXure provides a lower total cost of ownership and enhanced data center adaptability.

With each of the hospital's installed server racks generating 10kW of heat load, APC's InfraStruXure with integrated cooling proved to be one of the only solutions capable of meeting the hospital's cooling requirements for these racks. Capable of cooling 20kW per rack, the InfraStruXure solution provides up to ten times the cooling potential of traditional cooling approaches, which range from 2-3kW per rack.

According to James Weeks, chief information officer for Greenwich Hospital, "One of our local resellers, Available Power of Branford, Conn., suggested that we look into APC's data center solution for cooling blade servers. We concluded that APC's InfraStruXure system provides us with a well thought-out, turnkey answer for cooling our blade servers that generate tremendous amounts of heat, which, in a data center, is not an ideal scenario. InfraStruXure's modular flexibility also allows us to scale our IT systems to meet future demands. We are confident that this system will help us meet our IT needs, protect us in the event of a power failure, and allow us to continue to provide top quality care to our patients."

"APC is delighted to provide Greenwich Hospital with a start-of-the-art solution to address the hospital's network-critical physical infrastructure needs, including cooling its blade servers," said Dwight Sperry, APC's group general manager, Enterprise Systems and Business Networks.

"Greenwich Hospital and other most-wired hospitals are clearly taking a leadership role within the healthcare industry through their adoption of innovative information technology solutions to improve the quality of patient care, reduce medical errors and lower costs."
