NEC Unified Solutions Deploys IP Telephony Network For Leading Healthcare Provider

Exempla Healthcare Selects NEC Unified Solutions to Build and Support a Converged IP Network, Connecting its Three Facilities.
DALLAS, and IRVING, Texas -- HIMSS 2005 Conference & Exhibition, Booth #7247 -- NEC Unified Solutions, Inc., ("NEC") a leader in integrated communications solutions for the enterprise, today announced that it was selected by Exempla Healthcare, a Denver-based provider, to design, install and support a multi-million dollar Internet Protocol (IP) communications system. The network connects the organization's two pre-existing facilities with the new Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center, which just opened in December 2004. The NEC solution will deliver a significant return on investment for Exempla, with considerable savings realized by combining Exempla's voice and data networks.

Backed by Cisco planning, design and implementation services, NEC's network deployment involved installing Cisco networking hardware at the Good Samaritan Medical Center. This included placing approximately 1,000 Cisco Call Manager IP phones throughout three facilities for use by healthcare staff, and installing specialized healthcare analog phones in the center's patient rooms.

NEC will also manage and support the network allowing Exempla to dedicate its core resources to achieving its healthcare vision of being recognized as the best in the nation as measured by its patients and employees. The beginning of the implementation process included an IP Telephony Readiness Assessment to plan for the expected capacity of voice and data traffic, to optimize bandwidth utilization and to build redundancy and fault detection into the network.

End-to-end monitoring is another major component of the project. NEC's SecurePlus remote monitoring service identifies performance issues and resolves problems seamlessly and transparently before staff and patients are impacted by the outage. Fault correlation of Exempla's IP Telephony devices along with 24x7x365 on-site engineering support and maintenance for data and voice devices saves the organization time, increasing productivity and performance.

"We were looking for a qualified technology partner that understood our business needs and could provide us with a complete communications solution," said Steve Perkins, manager of Systems and Networks, Exempla Healthcare. "NEC's project management and IP solutions have given us a competitive, technological advantage in the healthcare market, distinguishing us from other organizations in the industry."

"Information is the lifeline of hospitals and NEC has a long history of ensuring that critical information is available to the people that need it. Our healthcare customers benefit from expertise at all levels of the infrastructure, from networks to applications to end-user devices," said David King, vice president of NEC Unified Solutions. "We are pleased to be working with Exempla to make it a more efficient and effective organization."
