InterSystems Demos Record Locator Service And Virtual Electronic Health Record At HIMSS 2006

Ensemble Universal Integration Platform Powers RLS, EHR Demos
SAN DIEGO -- InterSystems Corporation, the leading integration technology provider in healthcare, today announced it will showcase at the HIMSS 2006 conference in San Diego how its Ensemble universal integration platform can be used to rapidly build and implement a Record Locator Service (RLS) for sharing information across regional healthcare organizations. InterSystems will also demonstrate a virtual electronic health record (EHR) which integrates disparate demographic and clinical information - in real-time - into a consolidated, single view.


"Delivery of more comprehensive, timely information to providers at the point of care improves care delivery and saves lives. This is what's driving the formation of regional healthcare information organizations (RHIOS) in the USA, and EHR initiatives globally," said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. "An RLS, such as the one InterSystems has built on Ensemble, is an example of how healthcare information will be shared across the continuum of care in state-wide and regional EHR initiatives in the U.S."

The Ensemble-powered RLS revolves around an identity hub that utilizes sophisticated Enterprise Master Person Index (EMPI) technology from a major EMPI software vendor to identify and match patient information residing in disparate applications across different healthcare provider organizations. Incorporating industry standards such as web services, XML and HL7, the Ensemble-based RHIO implementation is based on the MA-SHARE RLS specification now under development in Massachusetts. "Given the tremendous drive to form RHIOs as rapidly as possible, speed-to-solution is critical for the enabling technology. With Ensemble, the RLS prototype was built from the ground up in less than two weeks," Grabscheid noted.

In a separate demonstration spotlighting the integration technologies needed to create and utilize a virtual EHR, InterSystems partnered with industry leaders including:

-- Medsphere Systems Corporation, which uses its OpenVistA health information system to simulate a hospital environment

-- Misys Healthcare Systems, representing a clinical laboratory

-- Partners Healthcare, which simulates the healthcare provider's hospital emergency department

-- Caritor Corporation, a systems integrator that worked with InterSystems to develop the virtual EHR and its web portal

-- Newport Scientific, providing the portable FbiDrive, which can be used by patients to store their own public and secure personal health record.

The demonstration system creates a virtual EHR by integrating demographic and clinical data from commercial healthcare applications into a single, consolidated view in real-time, for use by providers and other authorized parties. It also highlights public health/bio-surveillance functionality, including alerts, using the Ensemble rules engine and business process orchestration, as well as Newport Scientific's FbiDrive, which serves as a secure carrier of personal information as a patient moves among healthcare providers. The personal health record on the FbiDrive ensures that providers can access the most up-to-date health information for each patient and the device uses fingerprint identification to ensure information security.

The RLS and virtual EHR demos are running at InterSystems Booth #1501 at HIMSS 2006. Demo attendees will receive FbiDrives for their participation.
