Philips Showcases Integrated Healthcare Information Technology (HIT) Solutions Enabling Physicians to Better Share Patient Data More Effectively

Product suite developed as antidote to medical errors, misplaced patient records, and rising healthcare costs
ANDOVER, Mass. -- Philips Medical Systems, a division of Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG; AEX; PHI), today demonstrates its advanced portfolio of HIT solutions moving hospitals closer to realizing electronic health records (EHR) at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2006 annual meeting in San Diego. Philips integrated HIT solutions highlight the seamless flow of information across the hospital enterprise through intelligent image management with Philips iSite Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS), real-time clinical decision support with Philips CareVue Chart and shared patient data management with the Philips Xtenity platform, powered by Epic.

Philips demonstrates the clinical efficacy of its HIT portfolio at a time when a continued emphasis is being placed on the importance of HIT to improve healthcare safety and quality, and help reduce costs through workflow efficiency gains and enhanced communication of patient information leading to more informed clinical decisions and treatment. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONCHIT) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has announced an increased push to computerize the nation's medical records. Advocates say that EHRs could save the U.S. $140 billion a year in health care expenses.(1)

Also featured at HIMSS this year is Philips CareVue Chart C.0, the critical care and inpatient clinical information system designed by clinicians for clinicians. CareVue Chart C.0 brings together a wide variety of charted data--vital signs, trends, lab results, calculations and observations--and then applies a library of built-in rules to deliver multi-parameter clinical advisories that can help caregivers recognize important changes in patient status, so they may intervene quickly and ensure guidelines are followed consistently. For example, the system can help alert clinicians to the early warning signs of sepsis, which include changes in multiple vital signs (as recorded by the patient monitor) and white blood count (lab values).

CareVue Cart C.0 synthesizes and integrates real-time physiological data gathered from bedside devices and centralizes the patient chart, helping hospitals handle handoffs between caregivers smoothly and implement protocols consistently. The complete database is available at all times, saving countless staff hours currently spent requesting past medical records and gathering data for regulatory reports. An intuitive user interface allows non-technical users to query the database simply by dragging and dropping data elements. With CareVue Chart, clinicians are only two or three mouse clicks away from required regulatory reports.

Supporting the continuum of obstetrical care and the newborn nursery

The Philips OB TraceVue revision E.0 is an integrated system for obstetrical surveillance, charting, and archiving that enables caregivers to document the entire continuum of obstetrical care from the first antepartum visit through delivery, postpartum, follow-up visits, and newborn nursery. With Web access via secured LAN or phone line connection from the private MD office or home PC, a care provider can be directly in touch with the patient's progress. OB TraceVue is designed around the way obstetrical care works. At HIMSS 2006, OB TraceVue revision E.0 new technical enhancements include Microsoft Server 2003, support of the new Philips Avalon Fetal Monitor family, automatic disaster recovery via hot standby server, and OBTV user authentication via Microsoft Active Directory.

Enhanced Xcelera Cath Lab Management Provides Fast, Intuitive Reporting for Streamlined Workflow

Philips also introduces the newest version of the Xcelera Cath Lab Management system, delivering enhanced physician reporting tools for documenting diagnostic and interventional findings. A redesigned graphical user interface, harmonized with other Philips systems, shortens the learning curve and supports ease-of-use, while other enhancements include full integration with Philips HaemoSphere hemodynamic monitoring system for real-time clinical data exchange and improved workflow and user interaction.

With Xcelera Cath Lab Management's new features, physicians can improve productivity through a more flexible, streamlined reporting model. An interactive reporting system allows physicians to document clinical findings graphically, automatically generating appropriate narrative statements, making Xcelera Cath Lab Management one of the most interactive cath reporting tools on the market.
