BIO-Europe Spring(TM) Receives Unanimous Endorsement of Spanish Bio-Pharma Industry

Registrations up 30 percent over last year’s event in Milan
Carlsbad, USA and Madrid, Spain: EBD Group today announced that registrations for BIO-Europe Spring 2008, April 7-9, 2008 in Palacio Municipal de Congresos, Madrid, Spain, are up 30 percent from last year’s highly successful inaugural event in Milan, Italy.

In addition, BIO-Europe Spring has received the unanimous backing of the Spanish Bio-Pharma Industry, including Almirall, Esteve, Grupo Uriach, Cellerix and the backing of local hosts of Madrid Biocluster, PromoMadrid, IMADE, Cámara de Madrid, Genoma España, Interes, Fundación para el Conocimiento madri+d and CEIM.

“The companies and research activities based around Madrid form the heart of Spain’s emerging biotechnology industry. Today, Madrid leads Spain with 27 percent of total biotech companies and, significantly, accounts for 45.2 percent of sales and 45.5 per cent of employment by biotech companies. PromoMadrid is very excited to be the host of the BIO-Europe Spring 2008 event, which will help illuminate the rapid progress of our industry, the undisputed quality of our science and the great potential for partnering with Spanish biotechs,” said Jesús Sainz, Chairman of PromoMadrid.

Overall, the number of biotech firms in Spain has doubled in the last six years to 150, half of which are focused on product discovery and development. There are over 500 enterprises in Spain that are engaged in the biotech arena, producing a turnover in excess of € 20,000 Million.

“The prosperity of the Spanish biotech industry requires forming collaborations with firms from around the world and educating the biotech industry on the many benefits of forming alliances with world-class companies and research institutions in Spain,” said Dr. Josep Lamarca, Senior Director of Corporate Development Licensing Projects, Almirall. “As one of the largest stand-alone partnering conferences, BIO-Europe Spring in Madrid will enable the biotech industry elite to fully appreciate the deal-making potential in Spain, as well as engage with potential collaborators from across the biotechnology spectrum.”

BIO-Europe Spring utilizes partneringONE™, the industry’s most trusted and intuitive web-based conference partnering system that is purpose-built to create and facilitate connections among companies across entire global industry value-chains.

“We look forward to a highly productive and exciting conference in Madrid,” said Carola Schropp, EBD Group’s managing director. “The success of BIO-Europe Spring among key pharma-biotech players is the powerful mix of “virtual” online collaboration with a stimulating physical event. Partnering in all its complexity, whether based on product licensing or a technology transfer, whether for a merger or acquisition, the process must start with a contact and targeting the right partners at the right time.”
