CliniComp Appoints Alan Portela as Chief Operating Officer |
| Well-Known Healthcare Executive, Strategist and Speaker Rejoins CliniComp |
SAN DIEGO -- CliniComp Intl., a leading provider of high acuity clinical documentation systems and surveillance solutions, today announced Alan Portela, a well known and respected healthcare executive, strategist and speaker, as chief executive officer (COO). The appointment marks the return of Portela to CliniComp in a key leadership position. As COO, Portela is responsible for customer support, sales, marketing and business development.
"We are extremely pleased Alan is rejoining the company," said Chris Haudenschild, Chairman of the Board and CEO of CliniComp.” He was a driving force in Clinicomp’s founding and in guiding us to become one of the industry’s top clinical software leaders. His intimate familiarity with CliniComp, breadth of experience and proven track record as a results-orientated healthcare manager and operator will take us to the next level of success in modernizing healthcare to gain higher quality and more cost effective care results.”
“I am honored to serve as COO and appreciate CliniComp’s confidence in my abilities to contribute, shape and execute strategy to accelerate the rapid growth of our Essentris clinical documentation product suite in the U.S. and international markets," said Portela. “I look forward to collaborating with my former and new colleagues to advance our clinical systems to help our provider customers continue delivering the best and safest care possible.”
Portela has more than 20 years experience as a healthcare information technology advisor, strategist and executive. Before returning to CliniComp, Portela was executive vice president of Client Services at Global Care Quest, an Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based firm that integrates and delivers high acuity clinical data to clinicians via handheld wireless devices and desktop computers. Prior to Global Care Quest, Portela served as vice president of Strategic Initiatives at Patient Care Technology Systems, Mission Viejo, Calif., where he established partnerships with prestigious medical centers such as Albert Einstein Medical Center and Hoag Memorial Hospital.
During Portela’s early days at CliniComp, he was responsible for the support of approximately 35 hospital-wide installations totaling 10,000 beds. Portela was instrumental in the U.S. Department of Defense’s selection of CliniComp as sole provider of inpatient clinical modules for military hospitals.
An accomplished healthcare IT strategist, Portela visualized the impact of automation to address patient safety issues in the area of critical care medicine. For instance, he helped pioneer a Virtual Intensive Care model based on the collection and presentation of real-time clinical data to caregivers in order to reduce mortality due to a shortage of medical personnel. He also developed a concept for Clinical Automation Strategies via functional clusters, which he advanced through national speaking engagements, published industry interviews and journal articles. These functional clusters include computerized physician order entry, clinical documentation and the medication administration loop.
He lectures on healthcare IT for a Healthcare Executives MBA Program at the University of California Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business, formerly the Graduate School of Management. He served on the Board of Advisors of several healthcare technology companies as well as Century City Doctors Hospital, Los Angeles.
Portela earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from UADE (Universidad Argentina de la Empresa) in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
