Biopolitics Conference under the umbrella of BIOTECHNICA 2008

Special workshops examine the key issues affecting the biotech industry. Presentation of the BioRegions’ Innovation Prize
Hannover. The Biopolitics Conference, an interdisciplinary get-together for the biotechnology industry, will take place on 7 October under the umbrella of BIOTECHNICA 2008 Hannover. The list of attendees will include senior executives and middle managers from biotech enterprises and service-providers; representatives of central government departments; managers and staff from the BioRegions; BIOTECHNICA visitors; and representatives of the European Parliament. The conference program will be prepared by BIO Deutschland, Arbeitskreis der BioRegionen, BPI, DECHEMA/VBU, VCI/DIB and VFA Bio.

Taking place in parallel, the various workshops will examine the key issues affecting the biotechnology industry. The ideas and theories formulated during these workshops will be published subsequently in a congress volume. The workshops will be followed by a plenary session, which provides a platform for discussing the results and describing the relevant political issues. The program will conclude with the award of the BioRegions’ Innovation Prize, including detailed descriptions of the winners’ patented ideas.

The workshops will focus on the following topics:

HR/talents: opportunities and risks of a career in biotechnology
Technology transfer: new concepts for identifying and transferring innovations developed in the academic sector
Finance and taxation: equity capital and the mobilization of research investment in innovative sectors
Entrepreneurship: how to encourage entrepreneurship and scientific value-added in Germany
Healthcare economics: medical innovations and potential conflicts in terms of costs, benefits and reimbursement of costs
Intellectual property: fair patent protection for innovative small and medium-sized enterprises in Europe
Advanced therapies: new therapies beset by old problems: development – market access – reimbursement of costs
Biosecurity: safeguarding biotechnology services in global markets


The BioPolitics Conference will get the rich conference program rolling on day one of BIOTECHNICA 2008. It will take place in the Convention Center (CC) at the Hannover Exhibition Grounds, room 2, 8.30 to 12.45 hrs.
