Biotechnology is a growing and diverse industry. Biotechnology has applications in health care, agriculture, computer science, robotics and in may other areas.

At the same time, like every other job sector, biotechnology has its ups and downs and finding a job is an extremely competitive venture. To get the job you want, you have to sell yourself, but in order to do that, you have to figure out who the “buyer” (person with hiring authority) is. The biggest barriers to getting a job in the biotechnology sector are finding the jobs, and getting to the person who has hiring authority. Here are ten ways to find the jobs, and maybe to get past the gatekeepers to the person in charge.

  1. Newspaper Ads. That includes local job boards and things like that. This is the least productive way to find any job, but it is a way.

  2. State Employment Service. You might think that this would work the same way as checking newspaper ads, but you are actually more likely to find a job through your state employment service. In the first place, there are RP (real people) available to help you develop a resume that will get past the computer. In the second place, those RP prescreen candidates and make referrals to hiring professionals.

  3. Job Posting Websites. We’re talking about places like Monster.com and Dice.com. They are huge job marketplaces, and they have lots of listings. They match your resume to qualifications that employers are looking for. Because they have such a large number of listings, these are a good place to find a job in the biotechnology sector.

  4. Private Agencies. Many biotechnology companies only hire through private agencies. If you are interested in a particular company, call their human resources department and find out if they use an agency, and if so, which one. If they say they are not hiring, ask for the agency name anyway. You can apply for future openings, and that agency probably also handles hiring for similar companies, and there may be other job openings available.

  5. Web Research. Scope out companies in your area of interest on the internet. Look at their web pages and learn as much as you can about the company. If they have an employment page, check out what positions are available.

  6. Write Letters of Interest. Write to hiring managers of companies you are interested in, expressing interest in working for the company. This is not an application letter. You briefly introduce yourself and your experience/education, explain why you are interested in their company and department, and ask if they are anticipating any future job openings.

  7. Look for Internships. Even if it is unpaid, internships are a great way to get your foot in the door. Interns often become employees.

  8. Check Out Professional Journals and Conferences. Professional journals often list job openings, and conferences are a great way to connect with people who know about job openings.

  9. Walk In. Go to the companies you are interested and schmooz around. Check out human resources and see if there are any job openings. Get the names of hiring managers. Later you can call them and ask to speak to them about future job openings. Talk to other employees about their jobs, and how they like the company. You will get a wealth of inside information and contacts.

  10. Networking. Most people actually get a job through a friend, relative or other contact. A lot of the previous tips are ways to network and develop contacts.

There are ten ways to find a job in the biotechnology sector. Looking for a job can be more work than having a job, but these tips should make it a little bit easier.
