Media Preparation Technician

Career Overview

The media preparation technician has an important job in preparing the various media that will be used during various experiments and procedures during the data collection.

The media preparation technician is required to prepare reagents, slides and tissue samples are required as well as preserve them appropriately. They may also be required to assist with the experiment or procedure and follow directions given by supervisors or researchers during the process.

Media preparation technicians may also be required to help set up equipment prior to the experiment and help with the disposal of waste materials, including hazardous wastes, produced or used during the experiment or process. The media preparation technician must have a good knowledge of chemistry as well as biochemistry and laboratory procedures.

Experienced media preparation technicians usually work with minimum supervision once they have demonstrated their ability to work within defined standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the various labs and facilities.



Career Requirements

Most facilities and laboratories will list their own specific requirements for media preparation technicians. Generally a minimum of a two-year associates degree in biotechnology, sciences or related field is required. Preference is given to those individuals that have successfully completed an internship or have experience working independently in a lab setting.

A strong chemistry background is critical, as is an ability to follow directions and always work within agency and facility procedures and safety protocols.

The biotechnology field continues to grow as more and more pharmaceutical and research facilities turn to biological and natural alternatives to medicine and treatment options. In addition technology and science has advanced to levels that allow more detailed experimentation and the need for advanced clinical and laboratory trials and tests.

Media preparation technicians are critical in assisting in these processes and the demand for trained and experienced media preparation technician continues to grow and a steady rate.




Career Track

For many individuals media preparation technician jobs are seen as an entry level position into the field of research. Many post graduate students work as media preparation technicians to increase their understanding of laboratory procedures and to obtain a working knowledge of labs, safety procedures and protocols. Other individuals are drawn to the line of work because of the variety in the job.

Media preparation technicians with experience often begin to work in other areas of biotechnology including obtaining additional training to become laboratory assistants, research technicians and even focus on data collection and interpretation.

Media preparation technicians may have the option to take on shift management positions in large facilities provided they complete additional training and have a good working knowledge of the laboratory.




Compensation

As with many of the biotechnology careers there is a wide range of salaries offered for media preparation technicians. Much of the difference is due to experience and training as well as additional functions the media preparation technician may be required to perform in smaller and/or more specialized labs.

The starting salary for an associates level education and less than one year experience media preparation technician is approximately $25,000. With additional training, experience and certifications it is possible to increase the salary to over $30,000 per year.
