Quality Control Analyst

Career Overview

The job of monitoring and testing both the raw materials and product at various stages in the preliminary stages of manufacturing is the responsibility of the quality control analyst. This job is critical to ensure the final product is reliable and safe based on the quality of the raw materials used to create the final item. The quality control analyst often test both routinely and non-routinely to ensure the highest possible monitoring of the materials.

Once the data is collected the quality control analyst then enters the information into various data bases and documents, reports the findings to the various supervisors and regulatory bodies, troubleshoots any problems, immediately alerts any abnormalities or finding that fall outside of the regulations, and communicates all finding and reports to the appropriate parties within the required deadlines.

The quality control analyst must have a complete and thorough understanding of all SOPs, standard operating procedures, know the various regulation and be able to interpret them, as well as have very effective communication skills both with coworkers and outside agency personnel. The quality control analyst is often involved in revising and creating new SOPs to deal with new equipment or manufacturing methods within the biotech laboratory or manufacturing facility.

Career Requirements

A strong science background with a minimum of a Bachelors level science degree along with at least two years of laboratory experience is required for most quality control analyst jobs.

Senior level positions will also require knowledge in good manufacturing process (GMPc) and good laboratory practice (GLP) and significant laboratory experience, usually exceeding five to ten years. For most supervisory or upper management positions as a quality control analyst a Masters degree will also be required.

Job Outlook

There is a steady demand and increase in positions available for both entry level and senior quality control analysts. The increasing demand is due in part to the increase in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical products for an aging population. The other aspect that has lead to a demand for quality products is an increasing emphasis on safety and reporting of adherence to FDA and other regulations and industry guidelines.

It is expected that the biotech industry as a whole will continue to grow and expand for at least the next ten years. It is highly probably that this increase will continue beyond that timeline.

Career Track

As quality control analysts gain work experience the opportunities to move between agencies and labs dramatically increases. A senior quality control analyst with a Masters level education may be qualified as a manager, project consultant, or even become involved in developing and writing federal and industry guidelines and regulations.

Quality control analysts can also work towards upper management positions within both government and private industry markets. Additional education can lead to independent research or contract positions working on specific protocol development and refining.

Compensation

The average salary for a quality control analyst with a Bachelor’s level education in a non-supervisory role is between $40,000 and $48,000 per year providing they have at least four years experience with quality control or other laboratory experience.

Those Bachelors or Masters level quality control analyst with three to seven years of experience in quality control should expect to earn between $47,000 and $60,000 per year.
