Biostatistician

Career Overview

A biostatistician works in collaboration with all aspects of research including experimental design. Their job is to determine the statistical information from the study to help in finding treatments for disease and discovering how to record the effectiveness or success of a given experimental procedure.

Often the biostatistician is critical in evaluating the size of the study group, the information that needs to be gathered, and even the methods that should be used to obtain the correct data to record what the research is trying to prove or disprove.

Biostatisticians work with a laboratory environment but often spend long hours at a computer developing complex data analysis programs or obtaining information from research projects. A biostatistician may work within a government lab or facility, a private company such as a pharmaceutical manufacturer, university and college labs and research programs, hospitals, long term care facilities or within a specify biotech industry.

The biostatistician has to have a good understanding of experimental design, be experienced in working in laboratory environments, have a strong math or statistics background, as well as be effective in communicating, reporting, and working in a team environment. Good problem solving skills and creativity is very important in the design and development of research projects.

Career Requirements

An entry level biostatistician will need to have a minimum level of education of a Bachelors of Science or Mathematics with a focus on biostatistics, statistics or mathematics. In addition a strong background in life sciences or other related field is often required.

Most independent research projects or universities or government agencies will require a Masters or Doctoral level education in the same fields. Since there is so much interaction with other team members a history or background in medical health, laboratory work, life sciences, computers and other related fields are often required.

Job Outlook

Biotechnology jobs continue to grow at a faster rate than employment in other sectors due to the increase in grants and funds for development of new treatments and medicines. As the population continues to age the focus is on preventative treatment and more home based treatments.

This push has lead to the development of new products and technology in both the biotechnology and medical health fields. Biostatisticians are critical for data collection and analysis to prepare and produce the sophisticated studies that are needed to get approval for new techniques and medicines. It predicted that this boom in the biotechnology field will continue for the next several years, at least until 2014.

Career Track

Bachelor level biostatisticians are limited to working within the lab under the direct or indirect supervision of a more experienced team member. There may be the opportunity to advance to supervisory roles with a significant amount of experience.

Masters and Doctoral level biostatisticians are eligible for both management and supervisory roles within the research facilities or industry production companies once they have demonstrated their skills as strong and effective communicators and team leaders. Often experienced biostatisticians with higher education levels act as consultants and managers for various research projects both within a facitily and within other agencies.

Compensation

Most biostatisticians with a Bachelors level of training earn between $34,000 and $48,000 per year, depending largely on experience and training. Masters and Doctoral level biostatisticians may earn between $65,000 and $85,000 per year. Biostatisticians with upper management or project leader roles may earn in excess of $100,000 per year, but these individuals often have 10-15 years of experience.
