Clinical Data Manager

Career Overview

A clinical data manager works with the research team to coordinate and supervise all aspects of data collection, data entry, analysis and report information. The clinical data manager is responsible for keeping the data technicians on time and producing accurate and appropriate information for the research team.

The clinical data manager may be responsible for developing standard data collection methods for various departments or research projects, overseeing the development of new data protocols, defining data collection methodologies to be used as well as developing software to be used in new or existing data collection methods.

The clinical data manager needs to be very experienced in laboratory setting and should also be familiar with all aspects of the research. Most clinical data managers focus on areas of expertise and work with research and development in those areas. The clinical data manager needs to be able to communicate effectively both in written and verbal form, develop and implement timelines and procedures, as well as explain very technical information to a variety of stakeholders and participants in the research process.

The clinical data analyst is often in a management role and uses his or her past experience and clinical knowledge to make inferences about the data collection. A clinical data manager is a creative thinking individual with good problem solving skills and an ability to work under very stressful deadlines and challenging conditions.



Career Requirements

A clinical data manager usually is required to have a minimum of a Masters degree and often is required to have a PhD. The area of specializations for education will vary depending on the type of research project that the clinical data manager is managing. The area of specialization may include microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, chemistry, or any other related field.

The clinical data manager has extensive experience in a lab, usually a minimum of five years working on a research team within the area of specialty. Those candidates with additional training or specific skills within the lab may be more qualified for the clinical data managers job that a candidate with a more general background.

The level of education and the years of experience needed to be a clinical data manager make this position very difficult to find qualified individuals to fill. Therefore there is always a steady demand for trained and experienced clinical data managers, even those that have only worked in the field for the basic three years.

Areas of specialty in biotechnology fields continue to enjoy a steady increase in career options, and clinical data managers are included in this group. A clinical data manager that chooses to work with a private industry or with a government research project has many options for career advancements.




Career Track

Clinical data managers with Masters or PhD levels of education and more than 3 years clinical experience as clinical data managers are often promoted to facilities, laboratory or unit heads or managers. A clinical data manager is able to troubleshoot most of the aspects of a laboratory process, and this makes them excellent candidates for management positions.

Consulting, teaching or independent research projects are also possible career tracks for clinical data managers.




Compensation

A clinical data manager with the basic 3-year entry level qualifications can expect to earn $60,000 to $80,000 in a government facility depending on location and specialization. Private sector clinical data managers with the same levels of training and experience will make slightly more.

Clinical data managers with over five years of experience can earn closer to $90,000, with the most experienced and specialized making in excess of $100,000 per year.
