Clinical Research Administrator

Career Overview

The clinical research administrator is the go-between staff member that coordinates the information for users, enters data into relevant files and databases, assists with interpretation of data information, as well as maintaining and auditing clinical patient files or studies. The clinical research administrator may also be required to help to develop and implement the collection of data in new recording forms and data entry systems.

The clinical research administrator assists the clinical administrator in keeping all files and records in order and ensuring that the correct data is entered into the correct files and databases. The clinical research administrator may also carry out some data entry and even database development under the supervision of the clinical programmer or clinical data manager.

The clinical research administrator is also required to validate data, check for completion on each entry and notify the appropriate team member if data appears to be inconsistent or invalid. They may be required to complete follow-ups with patients or researchers, close out files or help set up sites and clinical trials.

A clinical research administrator must have an ability to attend to details, be able to follow standard operating procedures and data entry protocols, have excellent organizational skills and an above average ability to communicate effectively with all members of the team.



Career Requirements

There are several different levels of clinical research administrators. An entry level clinical research administrator requires at least a high school diploma and training in data entry as well as laboratory procedures.

For most clinical research administrator positions the minimum requirement is a Bachelor of Science or Arts in any of the science fields, business or nursing. Specialized courses may be required in biotechnology or medical sciences, depending on the position being applied for.

The number of medications and treatments for all types of conditions continues to increase, so the demand for individuals to work within the biotechnology field continues to increase as well. The clinical research administrator position is considered an entry level position and is therefore an area where there are both lots of job opportunities as well as advancement potential.



Career Track

A high school educated level clinical research administrator with more than three years experience may have the opportunity to move into some supervisory roles, especially those that involve coordination of projects or other less experienced clinical research administrators.

Clinical research administrators with a Bachelors level education may find that with additional specialized area they can advance to the position of clinical research associate, which allows for more independent work and research options. In addition specialization or continued training in data analysis or computer programming can result in many job opportunities within the biotechnology field.




Compensation

A high school educated clinical research administrator may earn between $22,000 and $28,000 after several years of experience. A Bachelors level clinical research administrator with some supervisory responsibilities can earn over $35,000 per year, depending on the area of specialization or the type of employment.

Private industry salaries for clinical research administrators are higher than government or hospital level salaries but usually require a Bachelors or higher level of education.
