Manufacturing Research Associate

Career Overview

The job responsibilities and duties of a manufacturing research associate include implementing and helping to establish the production and packaging methods of biotech products that are most cost effective, follow all regulations and guidelines, and are safe.

The manufacturing research associate may also be required to help maintain the various equipment that is found on the production line or within the production facility. The manufacturing research associate may report to the manufacturing engineer or other supervisor to ensure that all information, potential complications or problems, as well as the efficiency of the production and packaging is acceptable and within industry, company and federal standards and regulations.

The manufacturing research associate should have excellent communication skills, be able to work independently and perform necessary maintenance tasks on equipment in a timely fashion. The manufacturing research associate may assist or even develop the maintenance schedule for the production and packaging areas of the biotech plant or facility.

The manufacturing research associate is required to enter data, compile written reports, and submit all required documentation and reports to the appropriate agencies within the reporting period or timeline.



Career Requirements

The minimum requirement for a manufacturing research associate position is a Bachelor of Science degree in a related field. This can be in the field of science-based engineering, biotechnology or one of the life sciences.

In addition a good background, usually at least two years of experience, is required. This experience may be in any part of the laboratory or production field of biotechnology, but the preference is for production related areas.

Job opportunities for manufacturing research associates continue to rise steadily as more production facilities are opened around the world. As the number of plants increases and plants switch from a day production routine to a 24-hour production line the demand for manufacturing research associates increases.

As with most biotech jobs there are opportunities to travel to other countries that are developing biotech production facilities. Often these international opportunities provide additional education and even advancement opportunities that are not as available in developed countries and those counties with an already strong biotech industry.




Career Track

A manufacturing research associate can move into supervisory and lower level management once they have worked for more than 3-5 years as an associate. Many manufacturing research associate choose to continue their education and work towards becoming a manufacturing engineer or a biochemical development engineer within the same facility.

Some companies are willing to offer scholarships and special incentives for those employees that wish to advance their education and continue working for the same company. Larger pharmaceutical companies often have the best options for education and advancement.




Compensation

An entry level manufacturing research associate with less than two years experience in the production aspect of the biotech industry will earn between $22,000 and $28,000 per year. A more advanced or senior level manufacturing research associate with several years experience and some minor supervisory responsibilities can anticipate earning $39,000 to $45,000 per year.
