Molecular Modeler

Career Overview

A molecular modeler develops actual computer generated models of the various molecules and compounds in three-dimensional formats on computer for visual presentation to researchers and other stakeholders. In addition the molecular modeler is responsible for completing very complex data collection information based on the development of the model.

The data may be collected on the interaction of the molecule with other compounds, other chemicals or other interactions that occur during the contact time. This is very important for researchers to be able to make accurate predictions on how various chemicals will interact with human cells or cells of other living organisms in drug and medicine research and development.

The molecular modeler is able to make not only three-dimensional models of molecules but also makes short movies or video presentations of the ways that various molecules physically interact with each other. This visualization is key in research to look for patterns in particular molecular shapes and their standard reactions or interactions with other molecules.

A molecular modeler needs to be very familiar with the various molecular modeling software, have excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbally, and be willing to work as part of a team on a research project. Often the molecular modeler will be required to give presentation to both scientific and non-scientific staff and interested stakeholders so public speaking and ability to think “on your feet” is very important.

Career Requirements

A molecular modeler requires a Bachelors or Masters degree in medical research, life sciences, biotechnology, microbiology, chemistry or other related field. In addition proficiency with computers and software management as well as some experience with basic programming is often required. Many molecular modelers have an interest in art and graphic design and are able to incorporate these skills into the molecular modeling programs available on the market.

Expertise or education in scientific writing or publication is often considered an asset by those research facilities that hire molecular modelers.

Job Outlook

All areas of biotechnology and medical research continue to experience a steady growth for employment opportunities. With the increasing focus on development of new computer programs and advancement of technology in research design and implementation the demand for molecular modelers will continue to increase at least for the next several years.

Career Track

Many molecular modelers take a certificate in Science Writing and begin to write for grants or other publications within the science field. They may also choose to become more involved in software and program development and may begin to act as consultants for software companies in the area of modifications to existing software programs or development of new programs.

Molecular modelers may also become involved in bioinformatics and work towards incorporating the molecular modeling programs into the various data collection options and programs within the bioinformatics area of research and development.

Compensation

An entry level molecular modeler with a Bachelors degree in science can expect to earn between $25,000 and $30,000 per year. With additional experience or a Master degree the average salary increases to between $35,000 and $40,000 within two years.

Some molecular modeler with specializations in scientific writing may earn up to $45,000 per year and may also work on a contract basis with several research facilities at the same time.
