Clinical Informaticist |
Career OverviewA Clinical Informaticist is a medical professional that is trained in computer data analysis and also has specialized training in evidence based medicine and medical treatments. The field is relatively new and continues to grow as the use of databases and other resources increases to enhance both patient treatment and research programs.
While primarily involved in data analysis, entry and collection, the Clinical Informaticist may also help in overall professional development of staff regarding the use of data as well as become actively involved in team meetings and staffings of various patients or groups of patients. Usually the Clinical Informaticist will work within the Management Information Systems department of the hospital or research facility.
There are many options and advancements for those individual that meet the qualifications of a Clinical Informaticist. The position is usually based within the hospital or research facility so there is little travel or shift work required.

Career RequirementsAs the position of Clinical Informaticist is relatively new, there is no specific training required by a governing or licensing body. Rather each hospital or research facility sets the requirements within their research or Management Information Systems team.
Most Clinical Informaticists have the following experience or course work:
- Three to five years experience in the medical health field as a nurse, radiologist, pharmacist, therapist or working as a laboratory manager or technician.
- Five years experience with data collection, analysis and presentation.
- Understanding of clinical protocols, hardware, documentation and systems applications.
- Clearly demonstrate a good understanding of the various computer programs including MSWord, Oracle, Power Point, Excel, Access and Project.
- Able to right and speak clearly and report out empirical data in an accurate and organized manner.
- Work within deadlines and with a team.
- Show effective communication skills both orally and in written form.
- Have excellent organizational skills.
Individual programs may have additional requirements depending on the level of position that the Clinical Informaticist is assuming.

The current Clinical Informaticists will be in a perfect position to begin teaching the future graduates of programs designed to provide specialty instruction.

CompensationCurrently individuals entering the field of Clinical Informaticist can expect to make between $30,000 and $50,000, depending on their level of experience and the type of position they are applying for. Since research facilities may have a higher salary than hospitals there may be more movement towards those facilities initially.
Management positions such as project managers and designers or database managers may start closer to the $50,000 with advancement and increases in salary occurring frequently. As the demand for Clinical Informaticists increases those with experience in the field will be in greater demand, which may increase the overall salary for both experienced and starting Clinical Informaticists.
