Medical Informatics Director

Career Overview

The medical informatics director works with various groups and staff members within the medical facility to ensure that all information is provided to necessarily personnel in a timely, safe and efficient manner. This means the medical informatics director may be responsible for developing, implementing and managing formation exchange systems within the hospital or care facility.

The medical informatics director should be knowledgeable in aspects of patient care as well as medical interventions, documentation and record keeping throughout the facility. The medical informatics director should be familiar and practiced in all regulations, restrictions and protocols for the dissemination of medical informatics both within research groups and to outside sources.

The medical informatics director requires excellent ability to read, process and interpret protocols and regulations as well as excellent communication skills to keep employees and others informed of changes in requirements or regulations.

The medical informatics director works closely with the chief information officer and the information security officer or chief information security officer to maintain privacy and confidentiality of information.



Career Requirements

The position of medical informatics director requires both supervisory and management skills. A Masters level education in bioinformatics, business administration, hospital or healthcare administration or other related field is required. Some hospitals and research facilities may require a PhD for some medical informatics director positions.

A good understanding of databases management, data collection and information security systems are also required. Usually up to 10 years experience in the medical informatics field may be requested.

The number of hospitals and patients entering facilities continues to increase each year as the population ages. As the number of both patients and hospitals continues to increase the demand for managers in the informatics sector of the medical field continues to grow.

In addition to hospitals large clinics and even some physicians offices have developed their own data collection system and require medical informatics directors to train staff, monitor data entry and provide protocols for information requests. This pattern is anticipated to continue for at least the next ten years.




Career Track

A medical informatics director is qualified to move into a position as a chief information officer or even as a medical information systems director. In addition there are management positions within the hospital or care facility that require the knowledge and skills that an experienced medical informatics director has.

There may also be opportunity to act as an advisor or consultant smaller hospitals or clinics or to consult with private physician’s offices to set up protocols and procedures even for one and two staff offices.




Compensation

An entry level medical informatics director with some experience can expect to earn between $42,000 and $48,000 in the first few years. Those medical informatics directors with Masters level, some supervisory or management experience and more than five years working in the medical field can often earn $75,000 to $80,000 depending on the size of the facility or hospital and the location. Consultants often work on an hourly or contract bid bases.
