Career Overview

The information may be related to direct patient care and clinical research, management of the hospital or clinic or statistical information for financial and other related needs.

The medical information systems director will be required to know about the various delivery systems currently in use in hospitals and care facilities and will be able to assess, plan and budget for the implementation of the most applicable and beneficial system to the current facility.

The medical information systems director will also be responsible for working with the chief information security officer to develop appropriate and reliable security measures to protect information that is being shared and exchanged.

The medical information systems director will monitor employee use and training in the current information systems and informatics as well as periodically monitor system usage and troubleshoot any areas of potential concern. The medical information systems director will prepare any required reports or documents and work closely with the hospital or care facility management team.

The medical information systems director will need to posses a good understanding of informatics, excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as be very organized and able to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.

Job Outlook

As hospitals and other agencies increase in size and number of patients seen per day, week and year it is important to have efficient and effective ways to record, analysis and retrieve necessary information for both patient care and hospital management.

The level of training and experience needed to be a medical information systems director makes it a very specialized job with the hospital. The demand for medical information systems directors is expected to increase as the number of hospitals and research facilities increase across the United States and around the world.

Career Track

Medical information systems directors are already considered to be management positions but the opportunities to specialize in one aspect of information management always exists. As medical information systems directors become more familiar with developing technology they may become involved in systems designs, development, marketing and even sales.

Some medical information systems directors become consultants to smaller facilities or even to new hospitals and care facilities. The benefit to consulting is that often much of the technology can be completed off-site and requires only a few hours of on site troubleshooting in most cases. With direct links to the hospital the medical information systems director can even monitor activity on the system from a location off-site.

Compensation

Depending on the size of the hospital or facility and the location there can be a range in salary from $80,000 to over $120,000 per year. More experienced medical information systems directors will make a higher salary, as will those that work for larger hospitals and have more management or supervisory responsibilities.
