Clinical Information Systems Coordinator

Career Overview

A clinical information systems coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating the information systems that are used within the hospital or healthcare facility. This career involves in depth knowledge of data systems and retrieval as well as the most efficient and effective ways for medical personnel to be able to access the data for patient treatment.

The clinical information systems coordinator works with a variety of individuals within the hospital or healthcare facility from data entry personnel to medical staff. The clinical information systems coordinator participates in training and orientation and may work with specialized groups within the hospital to train them on data issues, security and confidentiality issues with regards to data and data systems, as well as working to effectively keep information flowing between various parts of the hospital or healthcare facility.

Evaluation of current information systems and knowledge of alternate or new information systems is important for the coordinator. He or she is often consulted or may even be responsible for upgrading or improving existing computer information systems or may be required to research and recommend new systems.

A clinical information systems coordinator must possess a working knowledge of computers and computer systems as well as having hands-on experience working in a clinical setting. Most clinical information systems coordinators have nursing experience as well as computer training in information systems. Experience working with various groups, excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as patience to teach computer skills to a wide variety of individuals are all important aspects of a clinical information systems coordinator’s career.



Career Requirements

Usually a clinical information systems coordinator will require an MS in Nursing or BNS with several years clinical nursing experience. Some positions also require experience in supervisory roles and working with information systems within a clinical or hospital setting. Experience with databases and computer software programs developed for hospital or healthcare facilities is an asset.

Usually a clinical information systems coordinator will have previous experience working in nursing informatics or systems management. Additional training in computer skills and information technology is strongly encouraged.

While some positions are being replaced by more advanced data and information systems the role of the clinical information systems coordinator cannot be replaced. The demand for individual nurses trained in informatics will continue to increase at a higher than average rate at least until the year 2014 according to the United States Department of Labor.




Career Track

An experienced clinical information systems coordinator may choose to enter into several fields including system and software design and even research and development of new information systems for hospital or healthcare facilities.

Some clinical information systems coordinator with significant experience or additional business or health management training may move into executive positions such as Chief Information Officer or upper management positions for the information technology department.




Compensation

Most clinical information systems coordinators with less than three years of experience will earn a yearly salary of $32,000 to $38,000. Clinical information systems coordinators in larger hospital or healthcare facilities or those with significantly more experience may earn in excess of $48,000 per year.
