DENTAL INFORMATICS
Dental informatics is a new subset of medical informatics and is involved in the
application of computer and information sciences to improve dental practice,
research, education and management. 1
Dental Informatics is involved in areas of dental practice
such as
-
Practice Management: There are now software packages that aid dental
practices with financial management, patient scheduling and billing, inventory
management, electronic claims processing, management reports and clinical
charting and treatment.

-
Electronic Patient Records: Dental patients can now have their records
stored electronically. The records would contain all aspects of their dental
care from patient history to charts and reminders. All dental computer systems
in the US now have to abide by the HIPAA.
-
Decision Making Support Systems: Online medical databases such as
MEDLINE, oral pathology databases and decision support systems all provide
computer-based decision in dental practice.
-
Imaging System: Intra-oral cameras and digital radiography have been
improved by advances in Information Technology and are now essential tools in
dental practice.
-
Teledentistry: This is
real-time or offline dental care via electronic transmission (such as video
conferencing), using computer networks, from different sites.
